General Information

Environmental and Plant Biotechnology (EPB) is a unique Master's Degree program offered in English for students from around the world who wish to be in the forefront of biotechnological developments and are enthusiastic about learning in an international and multicultural team.
EPB gives the opportunity to get the knowledge in modern methods of environment preservation, reclamation and use. Students gain the experience and skills in analytical and biotechnological ways to monitor environmental changes, act for bioremediation of polluted water and reclamation of contaminated and degraded post-industrial lands, including sewage utilization and waste management.
After completing the EPB study program, graduates have skills to use a range of state-of-the-art analytical and biotechnological methods to monitor and rationally manage environmental quality. Graduates are prepared to work in industrial laboratories and research institutions utilizing biotechnological approaches. They are competent to start up business or to be recruited by administrative units and local governments, workplaces, and other entities. They are also qualified to consult industry, farmers, extension specialists, investors and policy makers in formulating appropriate Environmental Protection packages based on biotechnological methods as elements of the environment-friendly policy

Our objectives

Agroecology is a modern approach to agriculture, where farming considers not only economic aspects but also widely understood ecological needs of the agrocenoses and adjoining areas. Contemporary farmer should possess extensive knowledge on plants and animals in rural areas and be aware of the relationships between living organisms and the natural environment.
Implementation of the rules of ecology into agricultural practice will allow for obtaining safe and healthy food. While realizing study programme a graduate will acquire knowledge about the impact of agricultural activity on the environment, organic systems of farming and food production but also on multifunctional rural development and economic aspects of these processes, which improves employment opportunities in the European Union institutions.

General information

Studies in Agroecology are offered as a 1 year and 6 months (3 semesters) programme, a specialization within the Environmental Protection. The programme comprises thematic areas (modules) addressing a variety of issues, including agricultural activity impact on the environment, organic systems of farming and food production, multifunctional rural development and economic aspects of these processes. Each module is composed of lectures, seminars and laboratory classes. About one third of all courses is optional.
We welcome the graduates from first degree programmes such as Bachelor (BA or BSc.) in: Protection of the Natural Environment, Horticulture, Economics, Biology, Food Technology or other fields of Agriculture. All candidates should present a language certificate from a well recognized language school or will be requested to take an examination in English at the University of Agriculture.
Admission numbers to Agroecology Programme have been limited to 15 persons, which will ensure individual working relations between students and teachers. Students progress is evaluated on the basis of their active participation in and contribution to the programme. The programme concludes with Master Thesis leading to a Magister degree in Agroecology with a note that the programme was taught in English.

Our objectives
Faculty of Agriculture and Economics is the oldest one at the University of Agriculture in Krakow. Its educational offer comprises full-time and part-time programmes, in compliance with the European Union standards. The Faculty is fully authorized to grant academic degrees and academic title of agricultural sciences in the field of agronomy.
Agriculture programme offered at the Faculty helps the graduates to acquire a comprehensive knowledge in the field of agriculture and agricultural technologies, including supplementary modules, like horticultural or livestock production or economic module, which improves employment opportunities at the competitive 21st century labour market.

General information
The graduate is prepared to work in governmental and self-governmental administration related to agriculture, agricultural consultancy and agribusiness enterprises as well as in scientific and research units. Graduates of the Agriculture faculty have in-depth technological and technical knowledge in the field of agricultural production as well as knowledge of methods of economic analysis, organization and management, which allows them to independently run their own farms and service companies in the field of agriculture.
The graduate who completed  the 2st degree studies in the field of Agriculture:

  • possesses advanced knowledge in agricultural sciences and agricultural economics, detailed knowledge in sciences associated with crop production, functioning and organization of farms in their economic, social and legal environment and basic professional knowledge,
  • is capable of critical understanding of knowledge and its practical application for description and analysis of typical problems and areas of agricultural activity and environment of agriculture.

Graduates in Food Technology and Human Nutrition are equipped with knowledge and skills in technical, technological, nutritional, and economic science. They are educated to be specialists experienced in food processing, food preservation, and storage as well as in food quality control. The graduates can therefore occupy engineering positions in enterprises, companies, or institutions engaged in the processing, control, or distribution of food as well as be employed as specialists in human nutrition. Description

The international study program "International Master of Horticultural Science" is focused on the education and training of students for their future activities in spheres of management, trade, and services as well as in governmental services at the European level. In the course of their studies, students can get a certain level of specialization on the base of passing through both obligatory and voluntary courses that have been selected with regard to current trends in modern European horticultural production. As a segment of special agricultural production, the field of studies "Horticulture" involves the horticultural industry in its complete scope and professional specialization at the level of the master degree.

Program is addressed only to the citizens of Poland and Slovakia.

The University of Krakow and Slovak Agriculture University of Nitra are the partner institutions cooperating in a joint international educational program, the “International Master Double Degree Program in Business Economics”.

The master program “International Master Double Degree Program in Business Economics” lasts four semesters (120 ECTS). The first semester of the program is attended at the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra. The second semester is attended at the University of Agriculture in Krakow, the third semester of the master program have to be attended at the Slovak University of Nitra. The fourth semester is assigned to one course at the University of Agriculture in Krakow and the preparation of the master thesis at the home university.

Our objectives

Graduates of the international master double degree program in Business Economics are able to analyze complex economic relations in business processes, propose and implement managerial decisions related to functioning of those processes. They apply a high degree of autonomy and creativity at managerial decision making. They command a deep knowledge not only from operative business management but also from the area of strategic decisions from viewpoint of globalization and economy as well.

Graduates of Renewable Energy Sources and Waste Management course have profound knowledge of the technical tasks of engineering and environmental management in the area of RES & WM. They have theoretically founded thorough knowledge of RES & WM, including engineering design of equipment, installations and structures designed to generate energy from renewable sources, and of waste management issues. They also have advanced knowledge of economics and law necessary to understand non-technical conditions of engineering work adequate to RES & WM, including extensive knowledge of the function and development of rural areas. They have knowledge about the operation and reliability of machines and equipment designed for RES & WM and the rules of creating and developing business based on the knowledge of RES & WM issues.


Graduates of Renewable Energy Sources and Waste Management course can single-handedly analyse processes typical of RES & WM and optimise them through analytical methods and simulation. They are able to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of performed engineering operations, including their originality. They recognise the systemic and non-technical (environmental, economic, legal) aspects of performed engineering operations. They observe OSH rules at work. They can perform a critical analysis of the operation and evaluate existing technical solutions (in equipment, structures, systems) applied in production of energy from renewable sources and in waste management. They have the ability to identify and formulate specification of engineering task characteristic of RES & WM and can analyse single-handedly phenomena that affect production of energy from renewable sources and the impact of waste management on natural environment. They can plan and supervise the operation of machinery, technical equipment and systems to ensure failure-free operation.
Graduates of Renewable Energy Sources and Waste Management course are aware of the importance of continued education and self-improvement in their field. They understand the non-technical aspects and effects of engineering, including the impact of engineering on natural environment, and the associated responsibility for taken decisions. They have the ability to interact and work in a team, assuming various roles, and are capable of establishing priorities that serve to accomplish a self-imposed task or tasks imposed by others. They can identify and resolve dilemmas related to the practised profession. They possess an entrepreneurial mindset. They are aware of the social, professional and moral responsibility for the natural environment (they are familiar with practices aimed at reducing the negative impact of performed RES & WM operations).

General information

Graduates in Food Engineering are equipped with knowledge and skills in the field of food engineering as well as food technology and nutrition and is prepared to work on engineering and managerial  positions in food industry. She/he knows the principles of market operation and understands the basics of marketing products and services related to planning and food production management, as well as knows the formal and legal issues functioning in this segment of economic activity. Has habits of lifelong learning and knows how to use a specialist language in the field of study. The graduate is prepared to undertake research challenges. A graduate of Food Engineering is prepared to work in all types of food industry production plants, including those dealing with the preparation of functional additives for food or industry units dealing with the design and construction of equipment for food industry plants. The graduate also has the necessary basics in the field of law and economy needed to set up his own business.

 

Candidate

Admission to full-time second-cycle studies in the field of Food Engineering may be applied to all who have obtained a diploma with the professional title of engineer in the fields of Food Technology and Human Nutrition, Brewing and Malting, Food Production Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Chemical and Process Engineering, Chemical Technology, Nanotechnology, Biochemical Engineering, Biochemical Technology, Biotechnology (including Industrial Biotechnology or Food Biotechnology), Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering and Agroengineering. Graduates of other fields of study will also be admitted, however, the prerequisite is to have the professional title of engineer/master's degree in engineering or to obtain at least 210 ECTS in the undergraduate courses of first-cycle studies, covering engineering competences.

Applicants should be fluent in English (B2 level by means of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages – CEFR or equivalent). In case of lack of language certificate an online interview is possible.

Description of the program Food Technology and Human Nutrition graduate studies:

After finishing the study graduate will have the ability to use advanced knowledge in the field of food engineering, food chemistry, technical, technological and economic sciences. The graduate become a specialist in the field of processing, preservation and designing of food systems, its quality as well as  processing of food on industrial scale. Additionally, he will know the principles of proper human nutrition and marketing including food law. He will be prepared to work as an engineer and/or manager in food processing factories as well as other units dealing with the acquisition, storage and distribution of food. The graduate will also be able to organize production, including the design of technological lines, selection of equipment, and to conduct an economic calculation of production. Using a computer technologies graduate will be able to manage and control technological processes. The graduate will also be prepared to take up scientific research and ready to realize his own PhD thesis.

Overall conditions:

Staff: All the teachers involved in the program are researchers and teachers making up a highly qualified staff of the University of Agriculture, each holding at least a PhD degree and fluent in English. Some classes and lectures may be taught by foreign teachers, currently employed as visiting professors to make the program more attractive and diversified.

INTERDISCIPLINARY BIOECONOMY STUDIES (MA):

The dependence of economies on non-renewable resources and the environmental problems caused by a linear approach to production and consumption pose significant challenges that affect the well-being of future generations. To address these challenges and transition towards a low- or zero-emission economy, it is imperative to re-evaluate our approach to production and resource management. Interdisciplinary Bioeconomy Studies are founded on principles of environmental stewardship and sustainable resource utilization, with a primary focus on meeting societal needs. Central to these studies is the concept of the circular bioeconomy, which advocates for replacing conventional refinery products with biorefinery alternatives. Additionally, it enables the efficient utilization of biological raw materials through a cascade approach, thereby enhancing economic efficiency and reducing environmental impact. Moreover, the circular bioeconomy plays a crucial role in strengthening food security, contributing significantly to the achievement of all Sustainable Development Goals.

The educational curriculum within the IBS program is structured around three key thematic blocks:

  • Socio-economic Context: Students delve into the contemporary economic and social landscape of the circular bioeconomy. They acquire the necessary tools to comprehend the principles governing production, industrial operations, and project execution. Emphasis is placed on fostering creative thinking, with mandatory Design Thinking workshops forming an integral part of the program.
  • Circularity Context: This segment of the curriculum familiarizes students with the various stages of material circulation within both the economy and the environment. Starting from sustainable primary production principles, students’ progress through the stages of biomass processing via biotechnological methods, culminating in the recovery of nutrients
  • In-depth Production Context: Students receive comprehensive instruction on the intricate processes, methodologies, and applications involved in converting biomass into non-food goods. This includes but is not limited to the production of bioplastics, biofuels, and cosmetics.

By providing a structured curriculum that encompasses these thematic blocks, the IBS program seeks to empower graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of the bioeconomy and contribute meaningfully to its sustainable development. IBS graduates have knowledge of production processes in the bioeconomy and understand their economic context both at the level of the entire economy and the activities of individual economic entities. Depending on the profile of their competences, through the selection of optional courses, they can develop their professional paths towards consulting, designing the value chain in the bioeconomy, working for institutions implementing sustainable development policies, NGOs, as well as towards the production and processing of biological resources.
